The Charming City of India
Chandigarh, was designed by the European modernist architect Le Corbusier in the year 1950. It is the cleanest and healthiest city in India. This well-planned and well-organised city is a charm in concrete. The name of Chandigarh originates from the name of Shri Chandika (the Godsess of Shakti) whose temple adorns the northern border of the Chandigarh.

Chandigarh is a very modern planned town, with 50 sectors. There are markets and shopping centres and basic utilities like schools in every sector which limits the total distance of travel for the basic requirements of day to day life. The sectors are well linked by means of an effective transport system. There is a small airport and a railway station, serving the transports requirement of the people. However probably the most convenient means of arriving at Chandigarh from Delhi (the capital of India) or Simla (a major tourist hill resort) is the bus.

By Flight : Chandigarh's airport is 12 km. from the City Centre. Indian Airlines and Jet Airways connect Chandigarh with , Delhi, Leh and Amritsar. The Corporation has a well maintained Tourist Information Centre at the Airport.
By Trackways : Chandigarh Railway Station is about 8 kms from the City Centre in Sector 17. Shatabdi Express and Himalayan Queen provide two train connections every day between Chandigarh and Delhi. Chandigarh Transport Undertaking and the Corporation buses ply to and from the railway station to coincide with the arrival and departure of important trains.
By Roadways : The Union Territory of Chandigarh is well served by an excellent network of roads. The National Highways No. 21 (Ambala-Kinnaur) and 22 (Chandigarh-Leh) are the chief road arteries linking Chandigarh with the rest of the country. The city is within motorable distance from a number of popular towns and pilgrimage centres.
By Bus : Buses of several State Road Transport Corporations connect Chandigarh with many cities and towns of neighbouring states. Buses may be air-conditioned, deluxe, semi-deluxe or ordinary. The Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) is located in Sector 17 (City Centre).

Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU)
The CTU is an Undertaking of Chandigarh Administration. It provides both inter state services and local transport services. The CTU coaches are well managed. The important cities which are connected by CTU buses are Delhi, Dehradun, Haridwar, Shimla, Manali, Katra (J&K) and major towns of Punjab and Haryana.

The Major Fascinationa at Chandigarh
Chandigarh is best known for its outstanding mixture of modern and folk architecture. The Secretariat, the State Library, Super Market, Sukhna Lake, Gulab Bag, Shanti Kunj, the Art Museum, the High Court, Bidhan Sabha (secretariat) and the Panjab University - are each a fine specimen of modern architecture.

Rock Garden : This is a major attraction for tourists in Chandigarh, completed by Nekchand. Built with multicoloured fragments of china and waste ceramics this magical garden covers an area of 64 acres, the garden consists of a network of paths, chambers and canyons and shows an excellent artistic treatment of recycling waste, a must visit attraction at Chandigarh.

Sukna Lake : Another spot in Chandigarh that attracts tourists and residents is the Sukhna Lake with an area of 3 sq kms. Locals take breezy walks along the banks of this artificial lake and there is provision for boating and yachting on all days barring Monday.

Rose Garden (Gulab Bagh) : In sector 16 of Chandigarh is Asia's largest rose garden Zakir Gulab Bag spread over an area 30 acres. Established in 1967, the garden was named after India's President, Zakir Hussain. The garden shelters around 50,000 rose-bushes of 1600 species. This garden is the venue of the annual Rose Festival, an event listed on the national calendar of fairs and festivals. This is one of the main cultural events of the city and attracts thousands of visitors.

The Super Market : If you are a shopping buff then you can try some at the Super Market. This shopping centre is also called sector 17 and is a poshly built up area with many large department stores (and offices) and acts as the community centre for Chandigarh.

Mata Chandi devi's Temple : The snow-white dome of Mata Chandi devi's Temple on the north-east of the city is visible from across the lake. It is considered to be an ancient site of major religious significance and is one of the 12 Peeth Sthans for Hindus. Buses take pilgrims between the city and the temple daily.
